Canada

Canada has long been a secondary football nation in a sporting landscape dominated by ice hockey, but the national team has grown steadily in the CONCACAF region. The Canucks won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2000 and lifted the CONCACAF Nations League in 2023. They have appeared at two World Cups, in 1986 and 2022, and will co-host the tournament with Mexico and the United States in 2026. The team is often referred to as the Canucks or Les Rouges.

History

Early years

Organised football in Canada dates to the late 19th century, and the Dominion of Canada Football Association was founded in 1912. The association joined FIFA the following year. The national team played its first official match in 1924, losing 2-3 to Australia in Brisbane. For much of the 20th century, Canadian football developed alongside the professional North American leagues and remained outside the top tier of the international game.

Canada entered World Cup qualification for the first time ahead of the 1958 tournament but did not come close to the finals. The country was more successful in regional youth competitions and in the Olympic tournament, where it reached the quarter-finals in 1984. At senior level, however, the team rarely threatened the leading CONCACAF nations.

1986 World Cup

Canada reached its first World Cup at the 1986 tournament in Mexico. After a strong qualifying campaign, the Canucks were drawn into a difficult group with France, Hungary and the Soviet Union. They lost all three matches without scoring and finished bottom of the group. Even so, qualification itself was a landmark for football in a country where the sport still competed for attention with other professional leagues.

Long wait for a return

After 1986, Canada failed to qualify for every World Cup for more than three decades. The team remained active in CONCACAF competition and improved gradually as the domestic game expanded through Major League Soccer and the Canadian Premier League. Gold Cup campaigns brought occasional runs to the latter stages, but the side still lacked the depth to break through in World Cup qualifying.

That changed in the 2020s. A generation led by Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David and Milan Borjan combined European club experience with a more cohesive team structure. Canada won the 2022-23 CONCACAF Nations League by beating Mexico in the final in Toronto.

2022 World Cup

Canada qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and was drawn with Belgium, Morocco and Croatia. A narrow opening defeat to Belgium was followed by a historic 2-1 victory over Croatia, Canada's first win at the finals. A final group loss to Morocco ended the campaign, but the team had shown it could compete at the highest level.

2026 hosts

Canada was awarded co-host status for the 2026 World Cup together with Mexico and the United States. It will be the first time the men's tournament is played in Canada. Matches are scheduled in Toronto and Vancouver, and the Canucks were placed in Group B with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar and Switzerland.

FIFA World Cup results

Canada has qualified for three World Cups, including the 2026 tournament as co-host (FIFA World Cup qualification not included).
